Wizard money in the real world

Wizard money

1 galleon (gold) = 17 sickles

1 galleon = 493 knuts (bronze)

1 sickle (silver)= 29 knuts

English money

1 pound = 100 pennies

American money

1 dollar = 100 cents

1 penny = 1 cent

Nickel = 5 cents

Dime = 10 cents

Quarter = 25 cents

Both English and American money are fairly similar in the sense that it is mainly in 1s, 5s and 10s. Wizard money doesn’t follow in the same pattern.

England follows the metric system now but before 1971 England followed the imperial system. That meant that money looked like the below.

1 pound = 20 Shillings

1 shilling = 12 pennies

5 shillings = 1 crown

1 penny = 2 half pennies

1 penny = 4 farthings (quarter pennies)

This system starts to look more like the wizard currency. This may mean that the wizarding world is still in their imperial system for money.

On the back of the two books J.K Rowling wrote for comic relief, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them’ and ‘Quidditch through the ages’ which was shown as £4.99 or 1 galleon, 11 sickles and $3.99 or 14 sickles, 3 knuts. This was in the original uk released books.

Wizard money to English money

1 galleon = £4.93

1 sickle = £0.29

1 knut = £0.01

Wizard money to American money

1 galleon = $6.64

1 sickle = $0.39

1 knut = $0.01

(Conversions from wizard money to American and English money came from here )

Wizarding money in America is called Dragot and Sprink but instead of confusing things I’ll stick with the English wizarding currency for this post.

English wizarding money seems to be a sort of spoof on the imperial English money system.

Cultural references of Harry Potter

In the Simpsons Movie, Homer dresses his Pig up as Harry Potter and then calls him Harry Plopper.

In “Bob next door” Side show Bob when attempting to kill Bart says ‘It will be the greatest murder since Snape killed Dumbledore”. Bart then says that he’s not got to that part yet even though the book had been out for four years at that point.

In “The Haw-hawed couple” Homer reads Lisa the Angelica Button book which is a parody of a Harry Potter book. There is also a parallel when the headmaster Greystash in the book dies which is similar to Harry Potter when Dumbledore dies.

In the episode “Prunella’s Special Edition” a book titled Henry Skreever and the cabbage of mayhem came out which all the other children were reading.

In another episode “Prunella Sees the Light” a movie titled Henry Skreever and the Brick of Wonders, also mentioned is the villain named Lord Moldywart.

In another episode “Prunella Deegan and the Disappointing Ending,” Prunella and Marina both have a race against each other to see who can finish the last book first. This book is The Knights of the Bouillabaisse. The school in this book is called Pigblisters which is similar to Hogwarts, as well as this there is a dangerous tree called The Mangling Maple which is a parody of The Whomping Willow. As well as this the students fly flying carpets instead of broomsticks while playing Soupitch which is another parody of Quidditch.

Team Starkid which in 2009 were a group of Michigan students created a play know as ‘A Very Potter Musical’ later on they also created ‘A Very Potter Sequel’ and ‘A Very Potter Senior Year’. These musicals were a parody of the Harry Potter films and featured characters such as; Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, and a personal favourite Umbridge (Played by Joe Walker). These musical parody’s are available to view on YouTube.

This was said to Castiel by Dean after Castiel tells both Dean and Sam that his powers aren’t full and will make time travel very difficult.

Dean tells people his name is Clint Eastwood when he and Sam travel back to 1861.  When Marty McFly goes to the past in Back to the Future III he uses the same alias.

More Gilmore Girls sorted into Hogwarts Houses

Richard Gilmore – Ravenclaw – Richard Gilmore was an easy one to sort. He and Rory are so alike, she takes after his thirst for knowledge so much. Rory goes to him for advice and he is very wise even when helping Lorelei. Rory is joined to him by their love of literature. He’s also very interested in the world around him, he reads various newspapers to keep him up to date with whats going on in the world.

Luke Danes – Hufflepuff – Luke was stuck between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor but ultimately I came to the conclusion that if everyone left him alone to work at the diner without any crazy schemes or problems he would still be happy. He loves Lorelei to pieces and deals with her and her stubbornness. He is super loyal to Lorelei and Rory and also to any one of his friends and although he would hate to admit it also to Stars Hollow. He is also very dependable, he looked after Jess for his sister even though he had no clue how to bring him up or change his path for the better but he did it and he worked hard at it because he made a promise to his sister. He also tends to make peace especially between Liz and TJ. He’s extremely hard working, he keeps his dads hardware store going even though he changed it into a diner, he works hard on the diner and even when he is made to fix things around the Dragonfly Inn he works hard. He also worked hard on the house for himself and Lorelei to accommodate him and make sure Lorelei didn’t have to move house. He would do anything to make the people he loves happy. He also makes sure that Lorelei and Rory are fed and happy, even turning on Dean when he thinks he’s broken her heart, and also safe by fixing various things in their house he thinks are dangerous.

Kirk Gleason – Hufflepuff – The decision to put Kirk in Hufflepuff was a hard one. I debated between Slytherin and Hufflepuff. He has ambition and is very diverse in skills. He has traits that belong to both Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Kirk is very loyal, to Luke, to Taylor, to Lulu, to the town of Stars Hollow. And he is willing to take on whatever role is needed by his friends, the good people of Stars Hollow.

Gilmore girls sorted into Hogwarts Houses

Rory Gilmore – Ravenclaw – I think Rory is a Ravenclaw because she values her books above friendship at Chilton. She is a book-worm at heart. She views intellect in high regard, she chose Jess over Dean because he was intellectually challenging and could match her in a conversation and have a different view. Even Logan is intelligent and that’s what first attracts her to him.

Lorelei Gilmore – Gryffindor – Lorelei is a Gryffindor because she is fierce and brave even in the face of hopelessness. She looked after Rory on her own as a single parent which must have been terrifying  at her age and then managed to get a job. She raised Rory alone aged 16 in a different town away from her family and she managed it and she raised Rory well. She was brave even though so many other people would not be in her situation. She also braved going back to her parents to get money for Rory to go to Chilton even though she would rather do anything but that. She’s also strong-willed and stubborn which I feel are attributes most Gryffindors have, and mix that with bravery and you have Lorelei Gilmore.

Emily Gilmore – Slytherin – This is not because I think she’s evil first of all. I think she has more ambition than everyone thinks she does. She married Richard and she had so much ambition for what Lorelei could have become in her eyes. People may see her as a house wife but she is so much more than that, she may not have a degree or be the president but she did have the resources to help other people and she did. She helped Richard and supported him in all his future and when he started a new business she helped the best way she knew how and she threw a party to help.

Top Five Favourite Musicals

Hamilton – I love Hamilton. I first stumbled upon it because it became popular on Tumblr. There were sooo many gifs and fanart of Hamilton and I was obsessed. Then I heard the music which is incredible, I was hooked on a musical I’ve never seen.  I loved everything I had heard about Hamilton, I love Lin Manuel Miranda’s music as well. It sure perfect and special.

Legally Blonde – I love Legally Blonde it was the first musical I went to see and it will always have a special place in my heart. My friend from school was obsessed with this musical and made me watch the films and also watch the musical on Youtube. I went to see a local show of Legally Blonde and it was the best thing I’d ever done. I went to the show with a friend who has been in theatre before and we had so much fun and I enjoyed the show so much. It shows that you can be a woman who’s girly and loves pink and still be a badass no matter what other people think of you.

Little Shop of Horrors – I love Little Shop of Horrors. It was something a very close friend of mine and I used to watch when we were 12 and it was a much happier time for us both then. It reminds me of happier times in my life. As well as this it is a very funny musical with brilliant actors in it.

Rocky Horror Picture Show – I love this musical because it sort of introduced me to musicals as a whole. It also showed me that musicals can be so much more than how they are portrayed in films and seen as very girly. It went against what I thought was the norm and I loved every second of it. Plus who doesn’t love Tim Curry and Richard O’Brien.

Hairspray – I love Hairspray because it’s anti racism and brilliant. The lead is plus sized and female which I find so refreshing. It really spoke to me when I was younger because it taught me about the 60s (roughly but it still did a little as there were real issues in it) and as well as that it shows the underdog and love can conquer hatred and bigotry.
